Designs I Love

Too often when I’m browsing the Internet I come across a beautifully designed site, stop and think to myself how awesome it looks, maybe tag it on Delicious under some tag that I can never remember, and then promptly forget all about it. Well, I’ll probably continue to do exactly that, but I thought it might help me remember if I post links to these designs on this site. At least I’ll have the chance of finding them later. So…I’ve added a new category, ‘Designs-I-Love’ and that’s where I’ll be posting links to sites with designs that really inspire me. These may not be the ‘best’ designs out there, they may not be new and fresh, but they made me stop and think for a moment and that’s good enough to wind up with a link here.

So, without further ado, here is the first site on my list.

Blogging is Over, Pull the Plug

Wired Magazine says blogs are dead. I think many of the original aspects of blogs have died, but blogging in its most basic forum will continue. After all, a blog is just another medium for communicating a message.

I do agree that blog comments and blog communities are dying. As pointed out in the article, blog comments have become a real cesspit in most cases. Ultimately, I think a page of comments on a blog is mostly a waste of time and space. Even if 5% of the comments are truly worth reading, it takes far too much time to scan through the other 95% to find those gems. That is why I removed comments from FinanceAndFat.com and I will be doing the same for all of my other sites.

I don’t think that Twitter can ever fully replace blogs, but it does make a great supplement. It will be interesting to see if any more well known bloggers take up the mailing list idea like Jason Calacanis has.

As for me, I will keep my blogs alive. I enjoy writing and, even though I don’t do it often enough, I view my writing as an important part of the long term plan for what I will be doing with my life.

Witnessing History

November 4th, 2008 was a historic day for America. Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States. The historic part, of course, is that Mr. Obama is an African American. Roughly 40 years ago, this country was divided by racial segregation and it took the National Voting Rights Act of 1965 to finally put an ‘end’ to discriminatory voting practices.

I didn’t vote for Mr. Obama and I don’t agree with his policies, but nevertheless I am happy to see the day that America elected a black President. I hope this is the beginning of the end of racism in our country. I’m sure it is naive to think that, but there is no doubt that our country has made real progress.

Next up on my list of historic-American-moments-I-hope-I’m-alive-to-see is the end of abortion. Perhaps Mr. Obama will change his mind and come to the defense of the innocents who are killed in our country every day.

I’ll be praying for change in America as always and I hope you will too.
