Witnessing History

November 4th, 2008 was a historic day for America. Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States. The historic part, of course, is that Mr. Obama is an African American. Roughly 40 years ago, this country was divided by racial segregation and it took the National Voting Rights Act of 1965 to finally put an ‘end’ to discriminatory voting practices.

I didn’t vote for Mr. Obama and I don’t agree with his policies, but nevertheless I am happy to see the day that America elected a black President. I hope this is the beginning of the end of racism in our country. I’m sure it is naive to think that, but there is no doubt that our country has made real progress.

Next up on my list of historic-American-moments-I-hope-I’m-alive-to-see is the end of abortion. Perhaps Mr. Obama will change his mind and come to the defense of the innocents who are killed in our country every day.

I’ll be praying for change in America as always and I hope you will too.
